“Technology has gone so wide these days that you could watch my scenes online right now on your smartphone or on Lexi’s chest,” Alexis Texas said with a nod toward her fellow Pink star.

“This is the new wave of the market and it is where we are going,” she said. “The internet is what is in; so we go back to the drawing board and find ways to give people what they want and make money at the same time.”

Innovations on display at the party-like event included a Real Touch device for men that simulated the feeling of having sex.

“Real Touch is the first device to do all the work for the guys,” said Scott Rinaldo, project director at the North Carolina company.

“It strokes, it squeezes, it heats and it lubricates all on its own.”

The devices were synchronised to adult videos when the first models were released about three years ago, but in the coming weeks their actions will be guided by porn stars on live internet camera feeds at a Real Touch Network.

One of the oldest pieces of British pornographic art has just been discovered beside the river Thames. At first sight, the bronze disc found near Putney Bridge in London looks like an old coin – until you notice that it depicts a sex scene.

This type of bronze token with its erotic imagery was specially made to spend in ancient Roman brothels. It’s evidence that brothels in Roman Londinium were just as busy as they were in ancient Pompeii, where brothels and their lewd wall paintings are among the well-preserved everyday shops of a Roman town.

Yet this is not just a hint of life in Roman Britain. It is also a glimpse of a hidden art history. These Roman tokens, with their detailed depictions of sex acts, had a dramatic influence on the birth of modern pornography.

While the Putney token has been hailed as a rare discovery from Roman Britain, such artefacts showing similar scenes were actually well known in Renaissance Italy.

Scholars in the 16th century didn’t know what they were – maybe something to do with the reputed excesses of the emperor Tiberius? – but they did leap on evidence of ancient Roman erotic art.

Anything from antiquity was considered noble in the Renaissance, so these “coins” (as they were misnamed) licensed saucy 16th-century art, including Giulio Romano’s famous series of pornographic illustrations I Modi.

Immediately prior to the female orgasm, the clitoris becomes exceptionally engorged, causing the glans to appear to retract into the clitoral hood.

So, I decided to cut the crap and be more like a natural woman. Hair is there for a reason, and the time, money, pain, and waste created by removing that hair simply wasn’t worth it anymore.

I can’t even begin to explain the backlash I’ve experienced from not shaving. I’ve had countless people tell me that I’m gross, unattractive or dirty.

The Voice of a [Bourgeois] Generation

“Girls,” the Zeitgeist HBO series is the anti-”Sex and the City.”

SATC, for all its ballyhooed Women Talking Realistically About Sex, was glossy, aspirational television. The characters were supposed to be like us, but they got into predicaments we didn’t recognize.

They attended cocktail parties from which you would be turned away at the door. These were Escapist Tales of an Impossibly Glamorous Foursome, about whom the most realistic thing was the way they talked to each other.

Not so “Girls.” I could hardly stand it. The protagonist’s parents cut her off financially. She was working on a memoir that wasn’t going so well. She hooked up with ill-advised shirtless men.

People who expect to watch TV to escape are living in the wrong era.

I live to escape, and I watch television when I want to confront the harsh, awkward realities of life head-on.

Maybe it’s a millennial response to “Girls” to say, “It was too familiar. I disliked it.” “It was so true-to-life that I had to turn it off.”

We spend our days trying to avoid awkwardness. Then you turn on “Girls” and there it is, back with reinforcements.

I can’t imagine what you’d get out of the show if you weren’t a Millennial twenty-something struggling out of the damp blanket of parental over-support. And if you were, why bother watching it on television?

It’s awful! If I want realism, life is sitting right there. Why would I watch something just as rife with awkwardness as my day-to-day existence, featuring people of normal attractiveness and problems that resemble my own?

It’s like they think art is supposed to hold the mirror up to life. That is the last thing I want art to do. Who are all these three-dimensional female characters with problems that do not revolve around shoes? Don’t they realize they’re on television?

You don’t realize how common your experience is until someone else goes and makes an HBO series about it.

One of the underlying principles of Millennial life is that we are all unique and special. That is why we all go to great effort to purchase Studiously Whimsical ensembles at unheard-of thrift stores.

We all wind up in functionally identical Variations on Sweaters-and-Opaque-Tights. In the effort to Say Something Different and Be Someone Unique, we all wind up looking and sounding about the same.

‘Girls’ is a comedy based on discomfort. Yet that’s where most critically acclaimed comedy is situated now, in that space between characters who seem so impervious to suffering that you never worry about them and characters you care too much about to find their predicaments funny.

They’re the kind of neatly capitalized problems you read about in magazines. “Is Facebook Making Us Lonelier?” “What Happened To Dating?”

It’s the peculiar misery of people with nothing to be miserable about. The show is based on the ultimate nihilistic thought.

It’s the realization that our problems are a consequence of privilege, individualism and the narcissistic pool we’re all drowning in. ‘Girls’ should be subtitled ‘Lessons in Despair’. Go on, laugh about it.

It is rare, in an anthology this voluminous, for the work to remain so consistently intriguing from beginning to end. What comes to the surface is the breadth of compassion each writer displays for the contradictions and varieties of life, and the characters at play in it.

The book is roughly divided into thematic sections; it moves from the human condition, reflected in sex, to the mundanity of the act, to the opposite of erotica, deviant behavior, sexual violence, some verse, and finally essays about sex or sexual behavior (my least favorite section).

“Maupin Row,” by editor Ron Kolm, depicts an educated couple living in a redneck shack that’s too cold for intimacy in winter. Through resourcefulness and sheer desperation, the couple turns to date nights in their pickup.

The male narrator writes: “We finally came up with an ingenious solution to solve our sexual woes. We’d hop into our half-ton pickup truck, drive to the East Tennessee State University parking lot, and fuck in the cab while keeping the engine running and the heater on.”

A classic line of sexual ennui comes from a short stanza in Hortensia’s verse, “Another Night In Gotham”:

It’s a pleasure to come across a book so full of life with all its nuances. There’s all types of sex in the book: man/woman, gay/straight, black/white, agony/ecstasy.

As a gender studies graduate, I’ve read Foucault and I’ve “read” Freud. I’m aware of the systems of oppression that operate in our world and I’m equipped to combat them.

To many, I’m the product of the longstanding struggle for gender equality. The world is my oyster. I ought to be the perfectly liberated woman.

I’m sure that there are plenty of men who obsess about the size of their biceps. I’m not trying to exclude them from this discussion. But I think we need to have a conversation about the overwhelming majority of women who have developed the nasty little habit of hating their bodies.

Sadly, this is not limited to adult women. The number one wish of girls aged 11 and 17? Justin Bieber flavoured jelly beans? Having a cute glee club teacher that really “gets you”? Majoring in sleepovers?

Nope. Losing weight. Even girls as young as three to five years old exhibit signs of this body-hating neurosis. Half of them are worried about their appearance.

The fact that anorexia is a socially contagious disease crystallizes the importance of the debate. Considering that anorexia has a higher death rate than any other mental illness and that nine out of ten victims are female, delaying this conversation is detrimental to women’s health.

Ashley Judd has courageously raised her voice following the media’s attack on her appearance. Her gutsy reaction has highlighted the fact that there is something wrong with our cultural images.

Before we change our minds, we need to change what messages we’re feeding them. I am hungry for more Ashley Judd being a fearless feminist. Instead I’m force-fed quantum analysis of the size of Jessica Simpson’s belly

Why is this conversation important? If women are closer than ever to reaching parity in Parliament and on executive boards, are women’s insecurities about body image even worthy of attention?

Let me answer that question with another question. What is the current ideal size for women? The iconic and elusive size zero.

If society now expects women to pave their own way, why is it simultaneously suggesting they should take up no physical space at all?

Until we fix this inherent contradiction, women with masters’ degrees will continue to obsess about their butts, and equality will be that 20 minutes on the treadmill they never seem to have time for.

The controversy has even hit comic books. Last month the well-regarded illustrator Dave Dorman wrote a post on his popular blog venting his disgust at a cover for the Saga series featuring breastfeeding, although no suckling, nipple or even cleavage can be seen.

In fact, the majority of breastfeeding images deemed “offensive” in these various examples show comparable skin to an uncontroversial low-cut top and less flesh than even a standard bikini.

By definition, the nipple is covered by the mouth of a child when a child is breastfeeding. Every magazine stand in the Westernised world and rafts of advertising images feature a sea of exposed female upper body flesh.

It’s not the skin we have a problem with, but the act of breastfeeding itself. And that response has been taught to us.

It wasn’t always this way. Popular American children’s program Sesame Street once routinely showed breastfeeding, but since the ’90s it has reportedly shown only babies being fed by bottle.

In one older episode, for example, Sonia Manzano, who starred on the show as ‘Maria’, breastfed her real-life child, and a child actor asked her if that was “the only way to feed her?”

Maria responded simply: “Sometimes I feed her with a bottle. But you know? I like this way best. It’s natural, it’s good for her and I get a chance to hug her some more.”

Children don’t find breasts offensive or sexual until we teach them to, and the complaints of people like Dorman, or those who report breastfeeding images on Facebook, reveal a learnt bias that may ultimately be damaging.

What is the signal being transmitted here about breastfeeding? Since when did the natural way of feeding your child come to be seen as offensive or controversial?

Fortunately, Facebook has updated its policy to directly respond to the breastfeeding issue:

“Yes. We agree that breastfeeding is natural and beautiful, and we’re very glad to know that it is important for mothers to share their experiences with others on Facebook. The vast majority of these photos are compliant with our policies, and we will not take action on them.”

Giving up Web Porn [For a While]

Spanking the monkey is a slang term for masturbation.

What would happen if men stopped using porn for a short period of time (say, three weeks) and were instead compelled to seek out other forms of erotic material in order to self-pleasure?

I decided to find out. As part of an informal “no porn” experiment, I reached out to five men of various backgrounds ages 22 to 67, both married and single, all of whom currently used Internet porn as a self-pleasuring tool, and all of whom felt their usage posed no problem to themselves or their intimate relationships.

As the three-week experiment unfolded, the feedback from the group of guys was intriguing:

All of the men ended up pleasuring themselves less than they would have normally had they had access to Internet porn.

While they still had the same urges to self-pleasure, most simply decided it was not worth the effort – and that freed up their time. Said Greg, a single guy in his early 20s who works from home as a freelance Web developer,“ I ended up getting a lot more work done.”

And when they did make time to self-pleasure, four of the five men also had much more difficulty, er, “getting started.”

“I would see something sexy, and get turned on, and my first instinct was to flip open my laptop and let my fingers do the walking. Business as usual,” lamented Chris, who is married and in his late 40s. “But without Internet porn, I just couldn’t get it going, and more than once I gave up.”

Kenneth, who is single and in his mid-30s said, “I actually went out and bought a copy of Penthouse, but I was really self-conscious. The whole experience left me feeling dirtier than actually just going to a porn site. Plus, there wasn’t nearly as much variety. I missed the browsing.”

Fred, a married man in his 30s, was forced to improvise. “I needed to watch something – you know, moving images – but I don’t own a DVD player anymore. I ended up reading one of my wife’s romance novels instead, and you know what? It was pretty hot! Now we’re reading them together, and I really like this whole erotica genre.”

In general, when the guys found new ways to self-pleasure, they also discovered something new about themselves. Fred discovered that he had indeed been becoming something of a “porn-potato”.

David, a man in his late 20s who is on the verge of moving in with his girlfriend, really enjoyed his strolls down Erotic Memory Lane.

“It had been a while since I thought about my sexual past: ex-girlfriends, hookups, etc. I used this experiment to start at the beginning and work my way up to the present.

“I remembered that I have some really hot nuggets buried in my past, and I also found myself thinking a lot about my current girlfriend and what a great sex life we have together.”

In fact, without easy access to Internet porn and the steady stream of anonymous porn stars, most of the men turned to their own erotic histories and specific sexy memories for stimulation.

Nick, who is married in his 30s with two kids, reported that he became more focused on trying to have sex with his wife, which led to some tension, and, happily, some resolution.

“We had some fights, and I definitely got grouchy, but once I removed the porn I became much more engaged with my wife. I realized we were getting sexually complacent and that porn was like a valve.

“Once I didn’t have the valve to let off some sexual steam, I became much more focused on the bigger situation of our sex life.”

At the end of the experiment, though, all of the guys returned to the Internet. “It’s just easier with Internet porn,” Greg confessed.

“I love sex with my wife,” Chris said, “but when I’m going solo I want the variety.

Lesbian Sadomasochism [S&M]

S&M: Top & Bottom

The term “sadomasochism” became popular with Freud’s speculation that sadistic and masochistic desires can exist in the same person, that one can move under certain conditions from masochism to sadism or in the reverse direction.

As a Freudian, one might speak of an individual’s sadomasochist potential. The term “sadomasochism” as adopted by contemporary “sadomasochist liberationists” refers to a contractual relationship between two (or more) parties.

Sadomasochism so understood has been the subject of political activist defense by members of both sexes in the United States for at least two decades.

The earliest support group of which I am aware is New York City’s Till Eulenspiegel Society formed in the early 1970s, open to both sexes, whether gay, bisexual, or heterosexual.

The Samois support group of San Francisco has been probably the most politically vocal lesbian group, publishing a pamphlet What Color Is Your Handkerchief? in 1979 and shortly thereafter, the anthology, Coming to Power.

Although there is no general presupposition in sadomasochist contracts that the parties will exchange roles, individual contracts can allow for role changes, and some “tops” (sadist, a.k.a. “S’”) report that they began as “bottoms” (masochist, a.k.a. “M”).

One reason for the move from “bottom” to “top,” apparently, is the relative dearth of “tops,” especially among women.

In sadomasochist culture such roles, like those of butch and femme (with which they need not coincide), can be fairly settled, signaled to others through dress codes or by various ornaments.

What Color Is Your Handkerchief? described such a code whereby lesbian sadomasochists signal their preference for being a “top” or a “bottom” by displaying a colored handkerchief in the right or left pocket and the kind of activity preferred by the color of the handkerchief.

In this article Sadomasochism refers to certain pleasures of erotic or sexual desire and erotic or sexual behavior, not to general hostility or self-destructiveness.

I have elected to treat lesbian sadomasochism not as an example of horizontal hostility but as a puzzling set of practices whose participants generally wish each other well and respect each other’s choices.

It is a matter of concern, however, that the only things distinguishing the behavior of an S from battery and other abuse may be the motivations of the parties and the consent of the M.

Disagreement is widespread among lesbians, as among feminists generally, over whether (or within what limits) this motivation and consent can make sadomasochistic play all right, ethically, and over the question what attitudes and policies are appropriate for outsiders to take, especially feminists who are not part of the culture.

There is a long history of collision with San Francisco feminists over attempts of Samois to rent feminist space and to participate in lesbian-feminist events, such as marches.

A better candidate for horizontal hostility than consensual sadomasochism may be the sparring that has gone on for more than a decade between lesbian sadomasochist liberationists and lesbian feminists who oppose sadomasochism.
